Do I look offensive? Would you swim in the same pool with me? Do I appear unfit or unable to swim? Some people think so. Many organizations with public and semi public swimming pools would agree that I am fit to swim– but at a limited capacity. Therefore they place unfair and outdated rules and regulations upon me solely because of my ostomy. Some of these rules include: Must wear baggy clothing~ Really? Other than requiring everyone to wear proper swim attire, mandating that any one group of individuals should dress differently than another group with the sole reason being the presence of an ostomy, is a form of discrimination. In addition, everyone knows when you get wet, no matter what you wear, when you … Read more →

After the April meeting of our Saratee Ostomy Group, several of us asked our guest speaker, Valerie, questions about the Convatec supplies, she had demonstrated, displayed, and made available to us. Even though I have had an appliance for 15 years, I have never belonged to a support group, before. So, learning that “free samples ” are available from most ostomy supply companies, was new, and wonderful news to my ears. My question was, “Why doesn’t Convetec manufacture a “one piece / convex appliance” with a velcro closure for those of us who have trouble “snapping” a “two-piece/appliance”, and dislike using a “clip”? Valerie was very honest– admitting that the company knows of the need, and is “working on it”. The two-piece appliance that she … Read more →

Prior to my recent wedding, I was often asked by female ostomates, “What kind of dress can I wear? What do I do if I need to empty? Can I eat anything?” Now that the wedding is over and done with, I can answer these questions! I chose a short wedding dress style. I did this because I was very concerned that if I DID need to use the restroom, then emptying my ostomy pouch might be a problem with a long dress. I was also worried that with a long dress my ostomy would show up too much, especially if I ate. I tried on many dresses, just like the brides-to-be do on all of TLC’s wedding dress shows. And just like the girls … Read more →

As active, fun loving ostomates, we spend a fare amount of time adventuring. So if you are out enjoying your life and you need to refresh your gear, or you have a blow out; being prepared is a very good thing. Any small bag can be your undercover ostomy travel kit. I use a normal looking lunch bag. Unless someone was searching for a snack, no one would ever guess what its real job is. Here is a list of some of the basics you will need to make your own travel kit: Barrier wafer Ostomy bag Water based baby wipes Roll of toilet paper – or several paper towels folded to fit Pen Ostomy gauge – to cut the hole the right size Small … Read more →

Up until nine months ago I would have been an unlikely ostomy advocate. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy, funny, and outgoing. I am not shy and I genuinely like people. However, when it comes to my health I was a very private person. And sadly, I had it all wrong. I lead my life in a way to minimize the effect of my disease. I would go to my treatments, surgeries and checkups then get back to life as soon as possible. I was under the impression that the less I thought about Crohn’s and the harder I pushed forward to be ‘normal’ the better. Past co workers would notice my occasional absence and ask about it. I always shrugged it off or … Read more →

Denial, Disbelief, Disheartened….at age 49, the words spoken to me by the doctor, “You have been diagnosed with an “incurable bowel disease” , was too shocking for me to believe. If one believes in a loving, merciful God, you ask, “Why me, Lord?” In my case, acceptance of the diagnosis came several years later. For 23 years, I would experience constant pain, diarrhea, bleeding, and a verbal. Denial that there was a God. Strange things began happening in my life, though. I’d be in the doctor’s waiting room, and pretty soon a conversation would start up with someone who was having symptoms like I had had. Could there be others suffering as I was? Yes,indeed! Too many, to my surprise. I began searching for answers–pre … Read more →

People who have IBD, Crohn’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis often take medication. Because of chronic illness, our meds can frequently change. Knowing their names, doses, and purpose can keep you safe. Some easy ways to help yourself are: *List medicine name, milligram strength, and dosage on a 3×5 card to carry in your purse or wallet. *Keep an updated list in your car next to your vehicle registration as an easy to grab back up. *Put the med list in your phone. *Try your best to remember the main medications you take. Be your own advocate. Protect yourself by being prepared for those expected and sometimes unexpected doctor visits.

A random thought popped into my head last week while I was doing yard work and working in the woods behind our house. It was a simple thought, but provoked such powerful emotions and memories for me that I had to take a break, have a little cry, and then recollect myself so I could keep working. The thought? I had suddenly recalled how 8 short months ago I had been doing the same kind of yard work and thinking to myself how nice it would be to have an ostomy so I wouldn’t have to keep running inside to use the bathroom or take medications to make my stomach stop hurting and my rear to stop burning. With that memory came the realization of … Read more →
